ANDERSON COUNTY, TX (KLTV)-
Last week, the state of Washington declared an epidemic after the worst outbreak of whooping cough in decades, and we are beginning to see whooping cough rear its ugly head in East Texas.
More than 20 cases of whooping cough have been confirmed in Anderson County alone.
Authorities say most of the cases have been in children seven to 10 years old.
State health officials say, that is a lot of cases for such a small area. But they also say, it's not unheard of.
"We've seen a slight upswing in Texas this year," says Paul McGaha of the Texas Department of State Health Services.
"It comes in cycles about very three or four years," McGaha continued, "This is not uncommon, but anytime it happens we take it very seriously and want the appropriate vaccines to be used and preventative measures to be taken."
